EDGERTON (MN) A BASKETBALL LEGEND
EDGERTON, MINNESOTA - A BASKETBALL LEGEND As most of my readers know, I am a strong advocate of basketball stories that have captured the fascination of the country in years past. Today I want to promote a book written by Tom Tomashek and Ken Kielty. This is a great story about the Edgerton (MN) Flying Dutchmen who came out of nowhere to go undefeated and win the Minnesota State Championship in 1960. This book is a must have for your basketball or sports library!....Edgerton Flying Dutchmen

2008-2009 STATE CHAMPIONS All the State Champions and Runnersup have now been decided. Each State Champion and Runner-Up, both boys and girls, are now listed. Max Preps (G-B) and Rivals have now caught up with my idea and they have done a good job as well but of course they have enormous resources which I do not. This has not been an easy process for me but it's been fun. All the finalists are shown with their final won-loss records and the city the teams are from. I am still updating but should have it completed early this week. Hopefully my readers will be pleased having all the state results in one place rather than searching everywhere trying to get them. WATERLOO WONDERS-NEW BOOK NOW OUT Seventy five years ago the Waterloo Wonders came frolicking out of the hills of the Lawrence County hills to become the most colorful, most exciting most unforgettable team in the history of Ohio high school basketball. I encourage all basketball fans to get a copy. You can find information by calling 888-728-8467 or by visiting the new book website at http://www.waterloowonders.com/

2007-2008 TOP TEAMS
POLLS SHOW VERSIONS OF NATIONS TOP TEAMS The latest polls note different versions of the nations top high school teams. As readers of this site know, I do not feel that Oak Hill and other schools that are non sanctioned by their individual state, are in the same league as the schools that must abide by strict rules including the recruitement of new players every season. I do respect and publish those polls because those guys are intelligent. I think they know they're wrong but they'll never admit it. That would make me right and they're not going to let that happen. The polls I will publish later separate the nations schools into three divisions, Traditional Schools, "National" Schools and Prep Schools. Here are the latest polls.. 2007-2008 HOOPSUSA BOYS HIGH SCHOOL RATINGS
HOOPSUSA RATINGS SHOW THREE CATEGORIES This week's HoopsUSA National Boys High School Ratings show three different categories of teams. In my opinion this is the correct and only true way to rate teams. While rating teams may be a guessing game at best, my system at least puts teams where they belong instead of rating them all together in one poll. My annual Consensus Ratings will begin when all of the top polls start rating teams on a weekly basis. I of course invite comments and any differing opinions..HoopsUSA Ratings

How a team can win a National Championship without winning a State Championship is a question someone other than me will have to answer. BOB HURLEY
ST. ANTHONY"S BOB HURLEY COLLECTS 900TH WIN If a coach wins twenty games for forty consecutive seasons, he or she would have eight hundred victories which is very rare in high school basketball. Coach Bob Hurley just recorded victory number nine hundred last week and has already surpasses that number. That's an amazing feat, especially considering the fact that New Jersey schools, unlike Texas, Louisiana and other states, can play only a low minimum number of games each season. Bob looks to be in great shape so only time will tell how large that winning toal will get before he retires.

ST. PATRICK DEFEATS HUNTINGTON
ST. PATRICK CELTICS WIN A GAME FOR THE AGES In what has to be one of the best high school games ever played, both from a team and individual perspective, Elizabeth (NJ) St. Patrick outlasted Huntington (WV) High 78-76 last night. A game like this one very often goes on a little longer and this one did as the Celtics watched three final shots bounce off the rim in the final few seconds that could have won the game for Huntington just before the horn sounded ending overtime and the game. Individually it just doesn't get any better. O.J. Mayo (pictured left) went off, scoring 47 points for Huntington, but Corey Fisher (pictured right) scored 37 for St. Patrick and had some key assists. Jeff Robinson scored 23 points for the Celtics...St. Patrick

MONTVERDE ACADEMY VS. BENEDICTINE SCHOOL
MONTVERDE & BENEDICTING; CLASH OF THE TITANS Coach Kevin Sutton (pictured top left) has his Montverde (FL) Montverde Academy team undefeated at 29-0, but they will have to be at their very best when they clash with strong Richmond (VA) Benedictine School Saturday night. The top individual matchup may be between Montverde's 7'1 Solomon Alabi (pictured bottom left) and Benedictine's 6'7 Ed Davis (pictured bottom right). Benedictine School had an early season loss to powerful Oak Hill Academy and that is the only blemish on their record. A victory over Montverde Academy, presently ranked number one in the HoopsUSA "National" Ranking, would put a solid exclamation point on their already outstanding season.

GEORGIA TEAMS OUTSHINE NATIONALS
GEORGIA TEAMS OUTSHINE NATIONAL OPPONENTS The state of Georgia has as much team and individual talent as any state in the country and they put some of that on stage Saturday night in the PrimeTime Tour Georgia event. The event was played before a large crowd at Norcross High School. The results showed Dunwoody High pounding Fort Lauderdale (FL) Pinecrest 87-61, Decatur Columbia beating top twenty five foe Mobile (AL) LeFlore 68-65 and powerful Norcross ripping Jacksonville (FL) Arlington Country Day 88-69. Marietta Wheeler (N.C. State commit J.J. Hickson pictured) was the only Georgia team to lose, but they led most of the game before a late surge by Prep School power Aston (PA) American Christian put them away 79-71. Game Most Valuable Players show in the Tournament and Event section below.

NATIONS BEST TEAMS FACE TOUGH MATCHUPS
NATION'S BEST TEAMS FACE BIG MATCHUPS AHEAD Now that Mouth Of Wilson (VA) Oak Hill Academy (Nolan Smith pictured right) and Lakewood (CA) Artesia (Renardo Sidney pictured left) have bitten the dust, Huntington (WV) High will probably be the nation's number one team come next Monday. Oak Hill lost to Chicago Simeon and Artesia was defeated by unheralded La Mirada. The Highlanders of Huntington also face tough games ahead with a January 30 game against Artesia at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium and games later against Scott County from Kentucky and St. Patrick from New Jersey. Oak Hill Academy jumps back into the fire against Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei, also at Duke on the 30th. Of course all of the top teams still face games against dangerous in-state rival teams. It'll be interesting to see who'll grab the brass ring as the nation's best team at the end of the season.

TOP 25 RATINGS - 06-07
ARTESIA, OAK HILL, PATTERSON HEAD TOP TEAMS How teams should be rated is speculation and a number of polls around the country show that. My version is no different. No one really knows who the best teams are at this point. My ratings are much different than the others. I have three top twenty five polls. No one is ever going to convince me that schools who bring in players every year are on an equal scale with traditional schools who aren't allowed to do that. With that said, here is the HoopsUSA Pre-Season three category......Top Twenty Five Teams

GAMECOCKS WINS NIT CHAMPIONSHIP......AGAIN! Leading from start to finish, the South Carolina Gamecocks became the first team to win back-to-back National Invitational Tournaments in over sixty years last night with a 76-64 win over Michigan. South Carolina had a disappointing season up until the SEC Tournament, but reached the final, losing by only two to Final Four participant Florida. The Gamecocks had defeated the Gator's twice during the regular season. By the end of the season, the Gamecocks could be called nothing less than a damn good team. NIT FINALS - SOUTH CAROLINA VS. MICHIGAN
SOUTH CAROLINA MEETS MICHIGAN FOR NIT TITLE Two teams that are playing as well as any in the country have reached the championship game of the NIT in New York. South Carolina, the defending NIT Champion, has beaten some of the top programs in the country on their miracle ride. The Gamecocks defeated NCAA finalist Florida twice and lost to the Gators by only two in the SEC finals. Since then Dave Odum's team has swept past Western Kentucky, Florida State, Cincinnati and Louisville. Michigan, coached by former Duke star Tommy Amaker, got off to a great start, but faltered later and did not get the bid they wanted to the NCAA. PREP SCHOOL PHENOMENON
PREP SCHOOLS THE NATION'S NEW PHENOMENON There have always been Prep Schools around the nation, particular in the eastern part of the country but now, more than ever, Prep Schools are showing up everywhere. Post Grad schools and others who don't go the fifth school route have become a phenomenon. The real purpose of the schools is stated to be a chance for youngsters to improve their education. Now, with hundreds of players coming to the states from all over the world and others who leave regular high schools to joing prep school teams, many feel that winning games overides education with some schools. Whether that is the case are not, colleges are knocking down the doors to get these very talented youngsters to join their schools. Here is a list of the top twenty five post grad players from Scout.com, but there is more super talent out there, much more.....Post Grads.

Some say that coaches and players just aren't loyal when dollar bills start floating in front of their eyes. No kidding! How many of us would turn down a better job or ignore suitors who want to hand out millions of dollars which would bring with it a lifetime of security, for self and family as well?.. HOOPSUSA PRE SEASON TOP TEAMS
WESTCHESTER, OAK HILL HEAD PRE-SEASON POLL As I have said many times, polling of teams is just someone's guessing game. This is my version of the new high school basketball season, but I'll probably wake up tomorrow and realize that I've left some deserving team out. Polls are fun and create excitement, but they are not an exact science and they are certainly not worth worrying over. With that said, I have given Los Angeles (CA) Westchester and Mouth of Wilson (VA) Oak Hill Academy the early nod as the nations best teams. I love watching Oak Hill play, but I do not believe they should be ranked with regular high schools. Voiding upsets, Oak Hill or some other school that has a complete new team each season with recruits from around the country and the world, is usually going to finish number one every year in every other regular poll. I do not think that's at all fair to the other high schools around the country. Sooner or later maybe the other polls will wake up and realize that fact....HoopsUSA Polls

HOOPSUSA CONSENSUS RATINGS
HOOPSUSA HIGH SCHOOL CONSENSUS RATINGS No one actually knows who the best teams in America really are. Upsets taking place almost every week and the experts having differing opinions is evidence of that fact. The HoopsUSA Consensus Ratings gets about as correct as it can possibly be done because the ratings from the top five polls are included. I also try to update team records as I receive the information. The top five polls that we use include USA Today, Student Sports, Prep Poll, iHigh and HoopsUSA. For some unknown reason USAToday has again decided to take a week off from publishing their rankings so their report is not included this week. OAK HILL WINS TO GO UNDEFEATED
POWERFUL OAK HILL ACADEMY WINS BIG IN BOONE The Champions Prep Classic in Boone, North Carolina was billed as a National Championship event, but in truth it was no more than another ho hum walk-in-the-park outing for undefeated Oak Hill Academy (38-0). Steve Smith's powerful Warriors hardly broke a sweat in breezing easily past two Prep Schools Middleburg (VA) Notre Dame Academy by thirty-two points, 80-48 and Laurinburg (NC) Laurinburg Prep by twenty five, 62-37 to capture another tournament championship. After seeing Oak Hill play in early December I was quoted as saying that "this was their best team ever" and I believe they have proven me right.

OAK HILL ACADEMY
OAK HILL ACADEMY MAY HAVE BEST TEAM EVER As most of my readers know, I do not rank Oak Hill Academy and some other schools, in the same ranking with regular high schools in my weekly Consensus Rankings. They are instead ranked in the National Poll. My reasons are well documented and are my own opinion. The other polls I use do not agree with me. My opinion does not extinguish the respect and admiration I have for Coach Steve Smith and his team. This may be his best team ever and I encourage fans, if they get a chance, to see this team play before the season is over. They have a legitimate star at every starting position and more on the bench. The link shows a team picture where fans can also link to the team roster and schedule...Oak Hill Academy

FOLLOWING THE BOUNCING BALL
FOLLOWING THE BOUNCING BALL TO MANY EVENTS This season has really been fun and enjoyable for me because I have been able to attend many more events than I have in past years. Now that I am retired I have the chance to move around a little more. Not as much as people like my friends Dave Telep, Clark Francis and some others. Those guys are everywhere, but I am not as young as they are and this is not a real job for me. Still, I have been able to keep my adrenalin flowing and satisfy my basketball passion....Following The Bouncing Ball

CIRCLE CITY CLASSIC - CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS
CHALLENGE OF CHAMPIONS PLAYED IN INDIANA Last week-end I attended the second annual Circle City Classic Challenge Of Champions in Indianapolis, Indiana. What a great event! Tony Mason and his staff did a great job setting up what has to be one of the nations best basketball showcases. The four games were played at historic Hinkle Arena on the campus of Butler University, a great place for a basketball game. Upsets highlighted the day. Results of the games saw Lexington (KY) Lexington Catholic overcome a thirteen point deficit to hand Indianapolis Cathedral their first loss 60-53. In other games, previously undefeated and state number one ranked Maysfield (KY) Mason County fell to Indianapolis North Central 92-75 and previously unbeaten Indianapolis Lawrence North lost to nationally ranked Detroit (MI Renaissance 58-55. The final team suffering their first loss was Peoria (IL) Peoria Central as they fell to Indianapolis Pike 57-50. I also attended the Indiana-Temple game in Bloomington. This may have been one of Indiana's worst games ever. Temple didn't play great either, but John Chaney's team won 59-50. Indiana fans didn't appear to be very happy and on this one day I could see why.

WHO HAS THE NATIONS TOP EVENT?
WHO HAS THE NATIONS TOP HIGH SCHOOL EVENT? Many Tournaments and Events around the country have gathered together fields which include teams ranked among the Nation's Top One Hundred. For the purpose of this article I am using my annual High School Basketball Consensus Poll which combines the top five prep polls in the country into one. The only difference is that I separate some teams into three different categories. The five polls include Student Sports, USA Today, Prep Poll, iHigh and HoopsUSA. Every pollster has different views and the Consensus Poll brings them all together into one. Heading the list of the Top Thirty Events with Top One Hundred Teams is the Prime Time Shootout in New Jersey with twenty four ranked teams. Slam Dunk To The Beach in Lewes, Delaware is second with twenty two rated teams.......Top Thirty High School Basketball Events

COLLEGE BASKETBALL CAROUSEL
SECURITY NOT LOYALTY COLLEGE HOOPS PRIORITY The College Carousel continues to go round and round as coaches and players grab for the brass ring. Some say that coaches and players just aren't loyal when dollar bills start floating in front of their eyes. No kidding! How many of us would turn down a better job or ignore suitors who want to hand out millions of dollars which would bring with it a lifetime of security, for self and family as well? COLLEGE BASEBALL TEAMS BATTLE IN SERIES
RICE OWLS WIN FIRST EVER NCAA NATIONAL TITLE Two of the highest Academic Schools in the country were in the finals for the NCAA College Baseball National Championship. Last night the Rice Owls came alive in grand style and pounded Stanford for the National title. As I have said many times, I love the tournament but I wish someone would explain to me why they do the brackets the way they do. The tournament should be like it once was where a team had a chance to play every other team in the event. The two four-team brackets does not allow that and is really unfair. One bracket could have the two best teams but you'll never know under the present system. Stanford did a great job getting to the finals, but they leave Omaha with three loses, more than any other team that was eliminated. It simply does not make any sense and in my opinion is a huge flaw in an otherwise outstanding college baseball tournament....World Series

NATIONS BEST HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS 2002-2003
WHO WILL BE THE NATION'S BEST PREP TEAMS??? There will never be a true National Championship for high school teams, so realistically no one will ever know just who the best teams are. Also players from all over the United States and the world move from one school to another. I don't think all schools should be ranked in the same category and I will not compromise about that because I know I'm right. Maybe some coaches and fans disagree. It's fun for me and others to just have an opinion. The final pre-season ratings will appear in my annual High School Basketball Tournaments and Events Report (available now). Information on more than one hundred events with dates, sites, teams, players, contact information and more in the Collegiate and Professional Edition. There will also be a simplified fan edition. Check these teams and give us an opinion. What teams should be added? Which teams shouldn't be there? What teams are in the wrong category and why? USA TODAY CELEBRATES TWENTY YEARS OF PREP HOOPS
EDDIE OLIVER RECRUITS MAKE USA TODAY TEAMS USA Today's recent article celebrating twenty years of high school basketball, brought back a ton of memories for me. I thought my friend Chris Lawlor really did a great job. I might have missed it had two friends, who are still members of the Beach Ball Classic Committee, not called telling me about the article and congratulating me on what I accomplished. One also told me that if I didn't blow my own horn, nobody else would, so I decided to "toot" a little. I'm really pleased that people remember. I enjoyed those days and I am very proud of my efforts. Since I live in Myrtle Beach, I wish the same number of great teams and players were still brought in every year. The players on USA Today's list are only a few of the great players I had and four of the teams won mythical High School National Championships. My involvement bringing in teams really goes back to 1984. I wasn't "in charge" then so I haven't mentioned those teams and players. The ones on USA Today's list are only a few of the great players I had during those enjoyable years. Others are listed in the Editor's Section....Top USA Today Players

KNIGHT OFF AND RUNNING AT TECH
Those who were saying that my man Bobby Knight
couldn't get good players to come to Texas Tech, can
think again. On the job for less than a week Knight
has landed two Junior College standouts. Joining the
Red Raiders will be 6'10" Ermal Kugo, rated the top
player in the JC ranks by many, from Seminole Junior
College in Oklahoma. Also, 6'8" Pawel Strorozynski, who
had originally said he would be attending South Carolina,
will instead be in the Texas Tech lineup next season.
